The first image is the original that I started with.

If the above image is too light then go to the edit menu and step back once to add more shadows. remember get the shadows right and the image will flow.
 
then use white paint brush at opacity 20 and very large, brush over around the image, it might take 3 or 4 goes to get the effect below,

Then to get the final effect like below lighten the eyes with a white brush but not too much, then using the same brush go over the face until you get the effect you are after, but don’t remove too much of the shadows.

Don’t forget you can use the burn tool as well with great effect to bring out the eyes/nose and chin.
Finally when your happy with the effect use the sharpen tool at 30% and run it over the eyes/mouth/eye brows and hair, and that’s it.
